License and attribution

Two different things with two different statuses: the text, and the work built on it.

In short

The Hebrew of the 1742 Amsterdam print is in the public domain and is not claimed under any license here. Everything original in this project — the translation, the labelling system's software, the visualization, and this site — is under the Apache License 2.0.

The Hebrew

The Hebrew text is the unvocalized 1742 Amsterdam edition of Derech Tevunos, as keyed by volunteers at Project Ben-Yehuda under catalogue ID 53742. It is in the public domain. Nothing in this project asserts a copyright over it, and the Apache license below does not reach it.

The English

The English is a clean-room translation of that Hebrew. Its technical vocabulary has been cross-checked against the Diaspora Yeshiva translation (Feldheim, 1988/2014) and uses that edition's terms where the author prefers them, because they keep enough of the Western-logic lexicon to be intelligible to a logician while diverging from the Western definitions wherever those do not fit how a sugya actually builds and tests a statement.

The aim is a functional vocabulary — one that lets a reader, or a program, label the moves and statements of a large sugya — not doctrinal correctness. Only the terms were taken from that edition; the quotations, their citations as printed, and the sense of every English sentence are the clean-room translation's own.

Editorial brackets

Researching the sources revealed places where the 1742 print's quotation or citation differs from the source it cites. Those are marked in the English with [ed. …] brackets giving the source's reading. The Hebrew print and its translation stand as they were; the brackets are the only addition.
